day 2, ...the remaing 6 miles! saturday night's storms presented an unexpected surprise of stronger currents, higher water levels and mud saturated run-off water. i suppose the most comical incident was our encounter with a group of UC Berkeley day-hikers in the midst of the slot canyon. One of their perplexed hikers inquired of us, rather disappointedly, "so, this is supposed to be the Narrows?" Amber was about to point out the Narrows for the gentleman using her new six-foot trekking staff, but was kind enough to spare his 'narrows' at the site of the Virgin River. alas, the weekend couldn't have been better spent in company, in scenery and in excitement!

day 1 of the 2-day, 17-mile trek from the gates of Chamberlain's Ranch House (6150' elevation) to the Temple of Sinawava (4471' elevation) through the Narrows slot canyon at Zion National Park. it started out as a chilly morning and turned out to be a beautiful day. this segued into an exciting all-night affair of deafening thunder echoing deep in the canyon walls and the strobe-light effect of the lightning flashing the colorful canyon walls every two-minutes amidst the balckness.

Zion National Park

|
Itinerary
Angels Landing: A 5-mile roundtrip hike gaining 1500 feet elevation off the valley floor. One fun hike packed with narrow ridges, bolted chains, fancy footwork and phenomenal (occasionally scary) views...

Itinerary:
Devil's Garden: An absolutely amazing playground of slickrock formations and hoodoos about 15 miles southeast of Escalante off Hole-in-the-Rock Road.
Lower Calf Creek Falls: 6 mile afternoon hike to the 126 foot Lower Calf Creek Falls between Boulder and Escalante, at the edge of Box-Death Hollow Wilderness.
Hell's Backbone Road: 45 mile scenic drive heading back to Escalante.
Bryce Canyon National Park: Probably the quintessential US national park for exploring hoodoos. The odd spires were created by water getting wedged in the cracks, and iteratively freezing and melting with the freezing nights and scorching afternoon sun.
Zion National Park: Mormon settlers in 1860 assumed they had truly found Zion, hence its name...

4:00 am: the start of a 4-day and 1084 mile adventure away from the sweltering heat of Phoenix!
Itinerary:
Antelope Canyons - Page, AZ: Navajo sandstone canyons sculpted out over millions of years from torrential flood waters and ceaseless erosion; also more poetically named "Tse bighanilini" (the place where water runs through rocks).
Glen Canyon Dam - Page AZ: Second largest dam in the US from the Eisenhower era (1956).
Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument - Escalante, UT: A 1.9 million acre expanse strecthing from Capitol Reef National Park to just east of Zion National Park.
