so, ...to celebrate Geri's 23rd birthday, we started our afternoon hike through the old tourist-trap mining town past Apache Junction. it was hot, ...very hot...
after a short photo-escapade through the town, we continued the scenic drive to Canyon Lake, ...which was interesting. upon arriving at the Canyon Lake Recreation Area's gate, our conversation went something like this:
Isabela & i: "we wanted to go down to the lake for an hour or so, ... how much is the entrance fee?"
Gate-house attendant: "it's 15 dollars for the day, for each car."
Isabela & i: "HOLY S#!T!! what the heck is there to see here for 15 dollars!?!?"
Gate-house attendant: "well, ...there's grass, ...oh yeah, and a parking lot, and a beach too. but we do have grass."
hmmmmm, ...interesting... (photos from Anuj & i...)

"It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Sang's visit to AZ, lasting a whopping 24-hour period: good friends are hard to find, ...i think Aristotle questioned, "What is a friend?" and answered it with, "...a single soul dwelling in two bodies." it's been (three years ?) since i've seen Sang, and i'm delighted to see, through all his life's experiences, trials and tribulations, speed-bumps and daunting digressions, his spirit isn't broken. conversations with him have always been a pleasant and refreshing retreat away from the superficialities of the world. - a genuine spirit, ...a very unselfish, inquisitive, optimistic and profound soul... the type of friend i hope everyone is blessed to come across one sunny day...

it's been a little break from the usual postings, so here are some old archived photos i have on record from Turkey, back from those 35mm days... (sorry it's a little late, Velma & Denise, hope you enjoy!)
- Side - first set of photos are from a tiny little harbor town on the Mediterranean, an hour east of Antalya, called Side (pronounced 'Sea-de). the town used to be one of Cleopatra's harbors back in the day -our summer house is near this town. i have many fond memories of the three kilometer morning jogs down the coast to this town to hang out by the roman ruins and watch the sunrise...
- Uçhisar - touristic town in the Nevshehir province - Cappadocia region
- Pamukkale - calcium oxide-rich waters flowing down the southern slope of Caldag located north of the ruins have built up deposits of white travertine on the plateau. the site's ancient name is Hierapolis (Holy City) and its modern one is Pamukkale (Cotton Castle). the ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can be seen at the site. (Necropolis is nearby) it was believed that the waters could cleanse the spirit, but alas, with too many tourists trying to save themselves, it's been shut down from bathing for the sake of preservation...
- Cappadocia - People settled this region as early as 300 BC, then Christians settled this area in early AD, before they were liberated. the point of developing in these elusive regions was to remain hidden from the Romans. some of the underground cities go down 22 stories, including residences, churches/monasteries, baptism pools, cellars, graves, mills, etc... many of the interiors are still adorned with Christian frescoes, although most are defaced over the years by other inhabitants/forces.
...as a disclaimer, my history could be a little off (it never was my forte) ...am i missing anything?

yep, gotta take advantage of the beautiful spring! time for another day-hike before the 120 degree summer begins to kick in. the watering holes at the creek were much higher this time, with a pretty muddy and fast current running through from the melting ice up ahead and the recent rainstorm. -that shouldn't stop us from taking the plunge though!
photos from Isabela and i... enjoy!...

...so the itinerary was actually tunnel trail and colonel devin's trail, ...but we ran into a little unexpected snow and never reached the trailheads. it happens. life goes on. ...and so did our hike, ...somewhere north of Payson and Strawberry.
