...all that effort for a t-shirt and medal, ...was it worth it? heck yeah! (...especially with the post-race hot tub, fattening pizza, and free Goo Goo Dolls concert.)
other than an almost 1/2 hour delayed start, i thought the race was very well organized for an inaugural event. bravo! the weather was fantastic for a winter season marathon!

so, ...i had family visiting from out of town, on one of Phoenix's grayer days. the sky's demeanor was not so much a bummer, as the clouds helped reflect the sun's brilliance. i've tried to describe the color of the evening skies here in AZ to friends elsewhere throughout the country, and they always found my descriptions a little odd and fruity, but maybe these unadulterated sunset shots will help add some validity to my apparently inarticulate descriptions.

Peralta Trail, Boulder Canyon and Weavers Needle
(Superstition WA about an hour east of Phoenix)
Distance: ~11 miles
Elevation: 2,400 to 3,766 feet
so it was a dark, and wet day, but the company and sprits were well worth the trip. Rochelle, Isabela, Amber, Keith and i, along with our k-9 companions (Asia, Mazzy and Sahara) set out for a hike through the superstition mtns. We hiked Peralta trail and part of Boulder Canyon to the base of Weavers Needle, and stopped for a chilly lunch accompanied by a light drizzle and a fabulous view. Amber, Keith and Mazzy continued (Canyon Lake - bound) as the rest of us concluded the day hike.
what a great time!
...so, who is this mysterious "Weaver" character? ...is his/her needle a metaphor for anything? ...and whatever happened to the Divinyls?...
...

Picacho Peak - AZ
|
|
(between Phoenix and Tucson)
Distance: 4.2 miles
Elevation: 2,000 to 3,374 feet
for the first mile of switchbacks the trail climbs just shy of 1,000 feet to the saddle. At this point, the summit doesn't seem that far away, except that the trail drops 500 feet down the backside of the mountain with about an 80 degree grade and a pair of cable handrails. The trail then shoots up another 900 feet over the course of a 1/2 mile. (...an especially tough hike for the 4-legged one - i would not recommend it if your pooch is not sure-footed, skittish, or pulls). The breeze, views and natural highs are well worth the effort though!

Bear Mountain Trail - Sedona, AZ
|
|
(Bear Mountain Trail, somewhere near Boynton Canyon)
our Christmas eve retreat from the city...
you see, Isabela, Sahara, Lego and i were actually driving to the Boynton Canyon trailhead but mistakenly took a left turn where it should have been a right. alas, with the clouds rolling in, and the daylight growing thin, we 'settled' with Bear Mountain trail instead. ...which turned out to be a wonderful surprise! ...funny how life works sometimes!
